I read with interest the recent article published by Harvard Business School on when Goal Setting Goes Bad. I'm sure I'm not alone in having witnessed reprehensible behaviours by people within organisations (often very senior leaders) all in the name of achieving goals (or KPI's). On it's most simplistic level, I wonder if this is at the core of the current GFC that all countries currently find themselves. When you think about it, the US banks, motor vehicle industries, real estate tycoons (the list goes on) were all driven by bigger and better profits, business growth indicators etc to the detriment of all else. I would encourage all leaders and my HR colleagues to have a read and see what you can do to circulate the message and influence changes within your organisations to ensure this never happens again. Don't get me wrong, goals are not a bad thing, in fact I am a person who sets myself challenges constantly, but these must strike a balance between results and behaviours… seems simple… so why isn't it? Check out the very interesting article on our BLOG "When Goal Setting Goes Bad"

This month I've enjoyed catching up with HR and L&D colleagues as well as consultants new to the aCE talent NETwork.  Sorry if I've not met with you but it is simply not possible to meet everyone.  Whilst discussions are always interesting and varied, a couple of common themes are recurring; the market is slow, and training days are being cancelled however there remains an air of positivity about an imminent increase in activity.  So hang in there and remember, the early bird catches the worm!!!

Have a great month,

Deirdre

The following 3 articles are our favourites for this month; and a snapshot of the fabulous content on the aCE talentNET blog  ... feel free to visit and make comments

  • The New Face of Talent Management
A new white paper on the ‘Future of talent” (.pdf 1.3mb) by the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD), is an interesting read! (thank you Brett Minchington) .  Particularly pertinent is the key reference in terms of using supply chain management processes for talent management i.e. skill up internal resources for the organisation specific stuff, and hire in outside resources for the not so specific stuff. Exactly, we say!
  • Instep: HR - Not being tipped overboard (Deirdre Gruiters)
Earlier in the month Craig Mason (Human Capital Magazine) wrote this interesting article regarding the current state of HR roles and the effect the GFC has had on HR redundancies. I tend to agree that, generally HR is in a good position and reaping the rewards from lifting their game over the past decade by aligning HR strategies with organisational goals. This reducing the rate and number of redundancies across HR positions. One of my friends has recently been made redundant from a regional medium sized company but was ‘on the market' for 1 week before landing a similar (quite possibly better) role shortly thereafter. Have a read and see what you think.
